I’m curious why you wouldn’t recommend mint. Is it due to some kind of problem, or is it just a personal taste thing?
I use mint daily so if there are potential issues I just want to know!

If he got the cinnamon version, that is indeed the default Ubuntu based one. I use the same thing.
One of the biggest draws of regular Mint IMO is that it leverages the advantages and resources of Ubuntu but it removes the parts that many people don’t like.
it shocked me that anyone could value personal wealth over coexisting

Complain on Lemmy about the people that you’re surrounded by, I guess.
I think most of us who live in America know the feeling.
That’s true, but I would amend it to say that the EC and our stupid FPTP system, plus the bias of the senate, are what’s keeping the entire Republican Party relevant.
The rabid and mean stupidity is what is keeping Donald Trump in particular in the race. The establishment might actually like to get rid of him and get back to “money good, human well being bad” like God intended, but they could not get away with it yet.
Judging by some of my distant acquaintances it’s something along the lines of HURR DURR GASOLINE WAS CHEAPER 8 YEARS AGO. They focus on a global commodity of all things.
Seriously, the only stuff I’ve seen from them that even approaches a policy comparison rather than “lol black lady is a ho” caliber stuff revolves around money. And some of that might actually be a valid discussion if it were correct and if it weren’t for the absurd amount of other issues.
It’s just a low-information team sport, regardless of how insane reality is.
Agreed. I probably could have phrased it better, but I was trying to describe how I make the choice to not dwell on it and instead put my energy into making the world a little better for them however I can.
It is not blameless, for sure.
Always! 🫡
I don’t know. That might help accelerate the disintegration of the GOP.
But like others have said, if he’s alive he’s running.
This sounds a lot like you’re telling people that the way to not be a sheep is to only listen to people who are just like you.
And yeah you have to make your own decision and not just be told that to do. However, I’d also throw out there that it is an extremely natural thing for us as social creatures to consider the breadth of outside opinions available to us when making a decision.
Agreed here also. I would imagine there’s some kind of correlation with intelligence, but I also bet it’s even more intellectual laziness like you’re suggesting. And maybe coupled with some emotional immaturity. So many people just don’t like questioning themselves, and/or see questioning one’s ideas as questioning their worth as a human being.
People absolutely get conditioned to just accept certain crazy stuff and reject reason. But that doesn’t completely release them of the responsibility of being thinking human beings. Though it’s easy to not even try when what you’re conditioned to accept is part of your identity and those close to you.
But it can happen. I’ve been consciously tuning out various types of conditioned subconscious reactions for my entire adult life.
I’m going to make myself a TIE Defender sandwich for lunch tomorrow!
I think they mean that 2/3 is close to but still not quite as big as 1/4 since 4 is bigger than 2 or 3.
I like to think of that stance as “positive nihilism” if that makes sense. It is liberating to really feel in your bones that it’s OK to focus on one things that really matter to you rather than the things you’ve been taught should matter to you.
Ouch. Nerve hit.
I am unashamedly the engaging and fun dad/uncle, and I have had multiple kids of friends straight up say to me I’m their dad, like while playing with them and my son who is their age.
It seems sad at first, but then I think to myself that if they’re so hungry for a father figure I’m going to give them attention and set the best example I can, because these little humans matter. And I do not feed into the father label, of course.
The couple kids that come to mind do have fathers at home. Though admittedly one I never see at get-togethers and the other is a proper piece of shit.
I’m good with cinnamon myself, but you can totally install KDE on mint instead. It is just Linux after all.
When I do a search for mint kde, this is the first result and has step by step instructions. It looks like it can be as simple as apt install kde-standard or kde-full.

I’m tempted, and I may mess with it some day, but honestly after tweaking some settings I’m pretty happy with how my cinnamon desktop performs.
Sometimes that can be convenient if I’m knowingly looking for a cheap Chinese knockoff to serve some non-critical purpose. Once it’s clear there’s a single mass produced model being rebranded by everybody, you can shop based on shipping time or price or seller feedback or whatever. Or if there’s no hurry, you can go find the product elsewhere at the “slow boat from China” price.
Fair enough. Thanks!
Fortunately with Linux, choice is the name of the game!
